SHAUN HUDSON
MD, January 2007 - September 2007
Shaun was born and brought up in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and started playing the euphonium at the age of six with the Wakefield Metropolitan Youth Band. Throughout his early playing career, Shaun was taught by Les Hepplestone, a former player of Grimethorpe Colliery Band. At his first competition playing solo euphonium with Wakefield Metropolitan Senior Band, Shaun won the National 1st Section Finals in 1987.
After several years at Wakefield Metropolitan, Shaun transferred to the Yorkshire Traction Band and then to Rossington Colliery Band (which became Polypipe Rossington), both on solo euphonium and both conducted by his brother John. He then moved to the Yorkshire Imperial Band, also on solo euphonium, before he took up the post of second euphonium at Grimethorpe Colliery U.K. Coal Band in January 2000.
Shaun enjoyed six busy but fulfilling years at Grimethorpe. During his time there he made several recordings with the band for C.D. and radio, played in many sell out concerts, including ‘Proms in the Park’ and went on concert tours to Australia, the Far East and the U.S.A. A couple of Shaun’s best memories with Grimethorpe are playing to a capacity audience in the Sydney Opera House, Australia, and the Carnegie Hall, New York. He also thoroughly enjoyed his debut in "acting" when he performed as Oliver Hardy (with Michael Dodd as Stan Laurel) at the 2001 Brass In Concert Championship, held in Spennymoor.
Outside of banding, Shaun is a peripatetic brass tutor for Liverpool Music Service and enjoys playing snooker and golf when time permits.
