Bass Trombone - Laura Smith

Laura joined Haydock in March 2007, and has previously played for Rainford Band and Trinity Girls before having a few years ‘rest’ whilst at University.  Laura has recently graduated as a physiotherapist and works in Liverpool.

2nd Trombone - Godfrey Irving

Godfrey joined the band in 1964 some 43 years ago as second trombone.  During that that time he was the band’s Secretary for 29 years and then became Chairman after that, which he still is!  Godfrey switched from second to bass trombone about 15 years ago to fill a vacant bass trombone spot and has recently moved back to second trombone when Laura joined on bass!

Godfrey spent a number of years training young players alongside Stan Gardner into The Haydock Junior Band which has made the band secure up until about 2 or 3 years ago.

In 1969, Godfrey played at the Royal Albert Hall in the Championship Section National Finals, at a time when the band was doing quite well and he has played under all of the Musical Directors at Haydock since and including Harry Oakes.  Godfrey says that he has had many happy times at contests, concerts and social events over the years, which has made banding a way of life for him.

As an Electrical Engineer (LCGI MIET MInstLM) Godfrey worked at Pilkingtons for 40 years and is now working for Waterside Training, in Pocket Nook, St. Helens.
